Updated 13 September 2026: Bruny Island

Bruny carried 220,525 interstate and overseas visitors in the year to March 2026, about one in six of everyone who comes to Tasmania from elsewhere, and close to 380,000 visitor trips a year once Tasmanians are counted. The island has 1,008 residents and pays about $1.8 million a year in rates. The Bruny priority now sets out the numbers, the funding gap and every option that has been assessed, with sources. Priorities updated to version 13: bushfire risk and the cost of insurance

The priorities document has been updated to version 13. It adds one substantial thing. Kingborough carries the highest bushfire building exposure of any council in Greater Hobart, and the cost of insuring a home here is rising because of it. Priority 7 now sets out six new commitments, including defensible space at street scale, a mitigation evidence register given to insurers each year, and an assessment of the bushfire risk that Council’s own land carries onto the properties beside it. Kingborough’s part in the bushfire preparedness pilot with the City of Hobart, RACT and the University of Tasmania Fire Centre is explained publicly for the first time. There is no promise of lower premiums, because no mayor can deliver that, and no publication of individual property risk ratings, because that data belongs to the landowner.
